Opening Remarks for Market Place

Senator the Honourable Arnold J. Nicholson

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade

5THBiennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference

Montego Bay

16-19 June 2013

Excellencies,

Jamaicans from home and abroad,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I welcome one and all to the Diaspora Marketplace, which is a wonderful addition to our Diaspora Conference. This is indeed a signal that Jamaica is open and ready for business.

I thank our sponsors and partners from the private and public sectors.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade is extremely appreciative of all your efforts.

I commend the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce which has come on board as a platinum sponsor through the Jamaica Logistics Hub Initiative.

It is extremely gratifying that over 56 companies and organisations are participating in the Marketplace.

I commend JAMPRO for the tremendous work it has done to provide a platform for business to business sessions throughout the conference.

I have every confidence that we will create business connections that will continue long after the conference has ended. In so doing, we will give concrete expression to the theme of our conference: Jamaica – a nation on a Mission, Jamaica-Diaspora Partnership for Development.

Equally gratifying is the fact that ten government agencies have collaborated to offer a one-stop, express shop at the Jamaica Diaspora Conference.

I commend the Registrar General’s Department, the National Land Agency, Jamaica Customs, the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency, the National Insurance Scheme, the Administrator General’s Department, the National Housing Trust, the Trade Board, the Companies Office of Jamaica, and the Tax Administration Department.

These agencies will offer a range of products and services and will deliver same by the close of the conference.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I said it at the opening ceremony and I repeat it now.

  1. This is economic diplomacy in action.

  1. This is joined up Government at its best.

  1. This is world class customer service.

  1. This is Jamaica on a Mission.

I am extremely optimistic that this conference will come to represent a turning point in our approach to development, where partnerships and unity are prized and applauded.

I am convinced that we will see transformation, growth and development in Jamaica, as we unleash the collective potential of our public and private sectors and indeed all sectors of civil society.

Who can deny that we have come of age for a time such as this?

Ladies and gentlemen,

On your marks! Get set!

A truly wonderful set of events will unfold in this Marketplace over the next few days.

And so, it is my distinct pleasure to declare the Diaspora Marketplace at the 5th Biennial Jamaican Diaspora Conference well and truly launched.
